The phosphorus load reduction target

The Clean Sea projects of the John Nurminen Foundation aim to make the phosphorus removal of wastewater treatment more effective. The aim is to achieve a level of 0.5 mg of phosphorus in a litre of purified wastewater in project targets, which corresponds to the recommendation by the Baltic Marine Environment Protection Commission (HELCOM). The overall goal of the projects is an emission reduction of 2,500 tonnes of phosphorus.

According to the action plan drawn up by HELCOM, the 30,000 tonnes of phosphorus annually discharged into the Baltic Sea today must be halved to return the sea to a good condition. Of the 15,000 tonne goal, the John Nurminen Foundation’s goal accounts for one sixth.
